Dessert with breakfast leads to diet success
This is the headline for an article on Nine MSN food today!
Are we sick of conflicting studies? I think so. This article is based on a
study of 193 obese non diabetic people; one diet included a low-carbohydrate,
1200-kilojoule breakfast and the other a 2500-kilojoule breakfast that was high
in carbohydrates and protein, and included a sweet food, such as chocolate. The
overall kilojoule count for the day in total was the same. Nothing was
mentioned about the rest of the day (obviously they were different due to the kilojoule
differences in breakfast).
Recently there was an Endocrinologist
on one of the evening current
affairs shows telling us all sugar was poison to the human body; we hear we
should eat natural sugar (e.g. fruit) but not cane sugar by other professionals.
When visiting the doctor last week she suggested I give up bread as wheat was
never meant to be consumed by humans which was interesting seeing her Mother
(also a doctor who specialised in weight loss) gave me a diet not so long ago
that contained a vast amount of carbs, mainly wheat based (it didn’t work!)
There is the low kilojoule diet, the low carb diet, the ‘don’t eat anything
white’ diet, the raw food diet, the no diet diet, the blood type diet etc. so
which one is correct? One doctor tells me High Protein diets adversely affect
the Kidneys another’s comment to this was ‘bullshit’! – Her exact words. I didn’t
tell her it was one of her colleagues that had told me that. I have absolutely no
idea what is correct but I don’t think they do either, all I do know is that
the weight loss industry is a big money maker so I’m not expecting all these
centres, potions and pills to go away in a hurry!
I’m still working on what is best
for me as I’m sure all these diets work for some and not others. The only thing
I do know for sure is fresh food is better than fast or prepared food, exercise
is essential but not to be overdone and avoid chemical laden food (read the labels and understand
the codes). I listened to some advice from a cardiologist that I listen too on
a regular basis the other day – the 19 from 21 rule. We have 21 meals in a
week, 19 should be healthy balanced meals but allow yourself a treat three
times a week.
I would love to hear what has worked for you!
