Gay marriage pledge puts pressure on PM

This is the headline in today’s Sydney Morning Herald all due to the Tasmanian Premier, Lara Giddings saying she would face down any constitutional challenge of proposed legislation for same-sex marriage in her state. The proposed Tasmanian legislation is a departure from Ms Gillard's vocal political and personal opposition to same-sex marriage and yesterday she made it clear she considered gay marriage to be a federal concern.

We have an unmarried Prime Minister with no children which is perfectly fine; we had a leader of the Greens until recently that was openly Gay, that was fine, we have a serving Politician who has just had a baby with her gay partner, that’s fine, we have openly religious politicians, that’s fine and openly atheist ones which is also fine. It’s the quality of the person and their commitment to our nation that is important in our Countries politicians, if it wasn’t the majority would have not voted them into power.

What do they actually think will happen if two people that want to commit to one another and just happen to be of the same sex and the law changes so they can? Are they afraid of the political ‘backlash’? That would make them selfish don’t you think? Not acting on the best interests of their community. Or do the community think by allowing these unions our social structure will change?

If, as a nation, we are critical of other ethnicities we are called racist, is this not just another form of racism? Or maybe just prejudice. We don’t tolerate this in our society so why the fracas about gay marriage? Whatever happened to the saying ‘to each their own’?

With all differences that go to make up our society why the big deal? What is everyone so afraid of? If others beliefs impact on the majority of our society I can understand the backlash but basically if you are gay your gay no one is going to ‘make’ you gay or ‘talk’ you into being gay. As I understand it, it’s not a religious ceremony that’s being sort but a legal confirmation of their union. The Government already recognises same sex relationships as far as Social Security and legal rights go so why is the legalisation of a union such a stumbling block?

Personally I don’t care who anyone goes to bed with it’s the person themselves that is important. If one person wants to make a commitment to another who are the Government to judge their suitability and who are we as a Nation to support our representatives that choose to.

As an example I have spent many years in the Design Industry where a greater percentage of my clients were gay guys (they have the best taste usually). I forged many friendships during that time and socialised regularly. One of my best friends I went to school with is gay; unfortunately she now lives in London so we don’t get to catch up much these days. I would never usually ‘class’ these people into any category because to me it really doesn’t matter – nice people are nice people, arse wholes are arse wholes. Age, sex, sexual orientation, colour, race or religion doesn’t change this.

If this post is a little fragmented I apologise, but if you hadn’t gathered this subject really pisses me off!

Who are we to stand in the way of others happiness??????
